MEV in Crypto

MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) in crypto refers to the profit miners or validators can make by reordering, including, or excluding transactions within a block they produce. It often involves front-running, back-running, and sandwich attacks, where the miner gains from price changes due to transaction placement. MEV poses risks to decentralized finance (DeFi) by increasing transaction costs and reducing market fairness. Tools like Flashbots are being developed to mitigate MEV's negative effects by providing more transparent and fair ways for miners to extract value, thereby protecting ordinary users from these exploitative practices.
